Overview

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) was developed by Dr. Albert Ellis.  It is a practical approach that supports people in handling tough situations and reaching their goals. It guides individuals in managing their thoughts, emotions, and actions to overcome challenges and achieve what they want.

The main goal of REBT is to help individuals identify and change unhelpful and unrealistic thoughts and beliefs. By challenging negative thinking patterns and replacing them with healthier ones, REBT enables individuals to improve their emotional well-being and behavior. This leads to a more meaningful and satisfying life.

During my sessions, I start by introducing the REBT framework briefly. You can download the REBT Handbook to get familiar.

In the first few sessions, we start by identifying the concern and set a clear goal for therapy sessions. I will then help you apply this framework in your current lifestyle to build rational and emotional resilience to cope with your daily challenges and adversities.

During our sessions, we will focus on emotional, cognitive, and behavioral goals related to the issue at hand. REBT can help with unhealthy emotions like anxiety, anger, depression, guilt, and maladaptive behaviors such as procrastination, addiction, unhealthy eating, and sleep issues.

REBT Therapy Process

In our therapy sessions, you’ll have a non-judgmental space to share your thoughts and feelings.

We will identify the core issue to focus on during therapy and set emotional, behavioral, and cognitive goals together that are practical to apply in your daily life.

Remember, your commitment to working towards these goals is key.

During the sessions I help my clients to:

  • Apply the REBT framework to real life situations that they bring to the therapy session.
  • Recognise their value & belief system and how it shapes their thoughts, emotions and behaviours.
  • Rewire unhelpful beliefs through therapy techniques to build healthy coping mechanisms.

What happens in-between the sessions?

  • Therapy is an ongoing process, and it does NOT end after the session. I always encourage my clients to reflect upon and practice these frameworks via practical homework assignments and apply them to their real-life situations.
  • I will assess how the therapy is affecting your life outside of sessions and help you apply these in practical, real-life scenarios.
  • Over a period of time, you will notice that you will learn to outgrow old thinking/beliefs/patterns which were causing disturbances and hindering your growth.

How will REBT help you?

  • REBT is a goal-oriented approach that helps you adopt adaptive beliefs.
  • It helps you identify and replace self-defeating beliefs that lead to negative emotions and behaviors.
  • You will learn to become aware of how your thinking contributes to emotional distress and how to think more adaptively to live more effectively.
  • REBT teaches how to avoid unnecessarily upsetting yourself over life difficulties.
  • By rewiring your thinking and adopting adaptive beliefs, you can start helping yourself immediately to deal with problems.
