Finding Calm in the Present Moment:

In the hustle and bustle of our day to day life, it’s easy to get caught up in a whirlwind of thoughts and worries, right? But guess what? There’s a simple practice that can help us find calm and reconnect with the present moment.

It’s called mindful breathing: By focusing on our breath, we create a sense of stillness amidst the chaos and guide ourselves away from dwelling on the past or stressing about the future.

Mindful breathing is like an anchor that keeps us grounded and centered. It is a powerful mindfulness exercise that invites us to pay full attention to our breath. By really tuning in to each inhale and exhale, we become deeply aware of our body and give ourselves space to find peace.

It’s a chance to observe our thoughts without judgment and gently bring our focus back to the present moment.

Now, let’s get started with some steps for beginners to practice mindful breathing:

1. Find a comfortable place: Look for a quiet place where you can sit comfortably. Whether it’s a chair or a cushion on the floor, make sure you’re relaxed yet sitting up straight.

2. Get grounded: Keep your feet firmly on the ground and let your shoulders relax. Place your palms on your thighs or knees, facing downwards. Gently close your eyes to minimize any distractions.

3. Focus on your breath: Shift your attention to your breath. Notice how it feels as it enters and leaves your body. Feel the rise and fall of your abdomen or the sensation of air passing through your nostrils.

4. Embrace passing thoughts: As you focus on your breath, thoughts might pop up. It’s totally normal! Instead of getting caught up in them, acknowledge their presence without judgment, and let them drift away like passing clouds. Bring your attention back to your breath.

5. Cultivate relaxation: With each inhale and exhale, intentionally release any tension or stiffness in your body. If you start feeling calm or comfortable, embrace that feeling and let it fill you up.

6. Take deeper breaths: Inhale, hold it for a brief moment, and exhale slowly. Repeat this process, counting to three for each phase. Just let your breath flow naturally and find a rhythm that suits you.

7. Return to your breath: If your mind starts to wander (which it probably will), gently guide it back to the sensation of your breath. Remember, this is all about practicing the art of returning, not aiming for perfection. Be patient and kind to yourself as thoughts come and go.

8. Reflect on your experience: After a few minutes of mindful breathing, take a moment to check in with your body and emotions. Rate how relaxed you feel on a scale from 1 to 10. This helps you become more aware of your inner state.

9. In the here and now: To conclude your practice, rub your palms together to create warmth. Then, place your hands gently over your closed eyes, letting the soothing energy sink in. Finally, slowly open your eyes and bring your awareness back to the present moment.

As you continue to make mindful breathing a part of your daily routine, you will start to experience its incredible impact on your overall well-being.  Mindfulness helps you navigate challenges with resilience, find solace in the present moment, and cultivate a deeper sense of gratitude and self-awareness.
